Cleaning After the Holidays

Winter holiday parties and potlucks can leave your office a mess. After the holidays are over, and the dust has begun to settle, you’ll finally have some time to breathe and assess what cleaning needs to be done. It is important to start the new year off right, get your workplace back to clean. A clean workspace is a productive workspace. Here are a few post-holiday and new year preparation office cleaning tips to help you get started:

Take down holiday decorations

Once the holiday season winds down, start by clearing away holiday decorations. Packing things up before the new year gives you the opportunity to start the year off fresh, uncluttered and focused.

Clean the Kitchen/Lunchroom

With all the holiday parties and food that gets brought into the workplace, you’ll definitely want to give the kitchen/lunchroom a thorough cleaning.

Don’t forget to:

  • Clean and disinfect all surfaces
  • Clean inside and exterior of refrigerator and freezer
  • Get rid of any leftover food
  • Clean interior and exterior of microwave
  • Clean the sink and under-sink area
  • Wipe down Interior and exterior of cabinets and drawers
  • Vacuum/sweep/mop the floor

Clean Bathrooms

Be sure to use the appropriate cleaners to remove unseemly dirt and grime, and eliminate potential germs when cleaning  office bathrooms. A thorough cleaning should include:

  • Apply disinfectant to all high-touch point areas including sinks, dispensers, door handles
  • Spot clean bathroom walls and stalls to remove visible soils.
  • Restock supplies such as soap, hand towels, and toilet paper
  • Empty all trash
  • Disinfect toilets and urinals
  • Remove any debris from in and around the toilet and urinals
  • sweep and mop the floors

Clean and purge workstations

The end of the year is a great time to clean and purge office workstations to get ready for the new year. Start by clearing every item and sheet of paper off your desk. Next, wipe down the desk area with a damp cloth to catch all the dust and debris. Now is the time to sort through the clutter and figure out where to put everything. You should have a secure place for important documents such as a drawer or filing cabinet. Try organizing papers into folders or trays. Think minimal. The less you have on your desk, the easier it will be to keep it clean and organized.

Vacuum

After your holiday party, be sure to check the carpet for any spills, stains, and residue. The office carpet has no doubt taken a beating over the winter – long days with people walking all over it, muddy shoes, parties, spilled food and drink, etc. Winter also requires more regular vacuuming than usual. Salt, dirt, and debris tend to collect in higher volumes and can leave your carpet looking unsightly. Placing mats and rugs in high traffic areas will help protect your office carpet from the elements, spills, and stains.

Clean the floors

Water, mud, and debris are more likely to get tracked into the workplace during the winter months and can lead to stains, discoloration, and extra wear and tear on certain floor types. This can seriously affect the appearance of your office space and the safety of staff and visitors. When it comes to proper floor care after the holidays and throughout the winter, a full-service approach that’s customized to suit your specific flooring needs is best. It’s worth considering this service as part of a regular cleaning regime performed by a professional company.
